A MAGPIE-focused roundtable during the AIVP World Conference: Energy transition in Ports from MAPGPIE‘s perspective

During the afternoon of November 28, the 19th World Conference Cities & Ports organized by AIVP (MAGPIE Consortium member and WP2 leader) focused on energy transition in ports and port cities. It was an opportunity to bring together players involved in the European MAGPIE project and its sister project PIONEERS. Zenaida MOURÃO, Senior Researcher for INESCTEC and WP4 leader moderated the one-hour round-table session. The roundtable included:

  • Reyer WILL – Senior Project Manager at Port of Rotterdam and MAGPIE Project Manager;
  • Patrick VAN CAUWENBERGHE – International Trade Networks Manager for the Port of Antwerp-Bruges and PIONEERS representative;
  • Miguel CASTRO – Senior Marine Pilot for the Port of Sines;
  • André LISBOA – R&D Engineer for EDP;
  • Luane LEMOS AGOSTINHO – Environmental Manager for the Port of Itaqui

They had the opportunity to express their views on the question: “How is the European Green Deal being implemented in ports and what are the challenges for the governance of the energy transition? What comparable projects exist outside of Europe? Mr. Will and Mr. van Cauwenberghe each presented the vision of their respective European projects, as they both are the lighthouse ports, as well as how they as landlord ports support the governance of the energy transition. Mr. Castro and Mr. Lisboa focused on their respective decarbonization actions in the MAGPIE context but also discussed the collaboration between them and the importance of stakeholder collaboration in the energy transition. Mrs. Lemos Agostinho introduced the Brazilian Alliance for Port Decarbonisation, in which the Port of Itaqui is heavily involved, that showcased similar initiatives in other regions of the world.

The roundtable ended with a discussion section and a Q&A with the audience. These discussions captured the attention of many participants, reflecting the interest around the energy transition issue. Participation in the AIVP World Conference allowed the MAGPIE to reach not only a European but international audience.

The MAGPIE Consortium presents its findings during the Seas to Skies Conference
On December 3 and 4, the European Green Deal projects – MAGPIE, PIONEERS, OLGA, STARGATE, and TULIPS - jointly organized a conference to present their mid-project findings to the European Commission as well as to relevant stakeholders. This conference was an important and valuable moment for the projects to exchange lessons learned and results found so far as well as present their advancements to a European stakeholder audience, who are key players in the topic.
A review of MAGPIE’s most recent academic publications
An important facet of the European MAGPIE project is the dissemination of results and knowledge to various audiences and stakeholders. One of the key audiences are research actors and students. The MAGPIE Consortium therefore works on publishing various academic papers on the results and findings of our project.
An interactive game to assess the social acceptance and spatial impact of the MAGPIE demonstrators
The AIVP World Conference Cities & Ports was an important opportunity for mixed (industrials, ports, cities) and international groups to provide their insights on the MAGPIE demonstrations. During the energy transition session on November 28, the participants of the parallel track (approximately 100 international port-city-industry actors) discussed 7 of the 10 MAGPIE demonstrators. Maurice Jansen, Senior Researcher at Erasmus University Rotterdam, in collaboration with the AIVP, organized a workshop in the form of an interactive game.
